a book that's right for you!

 If you are wanting to select a book that is "just right" for you, the five finger rule will help you to find a "just right" book.

 
Five Finger Rule!
Choose a book and read the first page or two.  You can also go to a page in the middle of the book.
Start reading the page.
Hold up one finger for EVERY word you do not know.
 
1 finger = The book is too EASY. Select another book
 
2 or 3 fingers = The book is JUST RIGHT! Happy Reading
 
4 or 5 fingers = The book is too HARD. Select another book 
 
 
 

HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN TO ENJOY READING!

READING FOR INFORMATION IDEAS


*USING A CITY, STATE, OR U.S. MAP, LOCATE WHERE YOU LIVE AND OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST.

*FIND A NEW WORD IN THE NEWSPAPER OR MAGAZINE AND DISCUSS ITS MEANING.

*USING MAGAZINES AND NEWSPAPERS, READ ABOUT CARS, TRAINS, PLANES, AND OTHER FORMS OF TRANSPORTATION.

*READ THE WEATHER REPORT IN THE NEWSPAPER AND DISCUSS SOME WEATHER WORDS.

*FIND A GOOD SNACK RECIPE AND MAKE IT TOGETHER.

*READ A SPORTS ARTICLE TOGETHER IN THE NEWSPAPER AND TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE VOCABULARY WORDS.

*GET SOME TRAVEL BROCHURES CONCERNING PLACES OF INTEREST.  READ ABOUT THE CLIMATE AND THE ATTRACTIONS FOUND IN THOSE AREAS.  PLAN A PRETEND TRIP TO TRAVEL TO THAT DESTINATION.  TALK ABOUT THE THINGS YOU WOULD NEED TO TAKE WITH YOU.

*SPEND TIME TOGETHER CUTTING OUT THE COUPONS FROM ADVERTISEMENTS THAT YOU COULD USE AT THE GROCERY STORE.

*ON A STAY-IN DAY, GET OUT A BOARD GAME, READ THE DIRECTIONS TOGETHER, AND HAVE FUN PLAYING THE GAME.

*MAKE A GROCERY LIST.  HELP THE CHILD CATEGORIZE THE FOOD ITEMS.  WHICH ITEMS WOULD GO UNDER:  MEAT, CEREAL, CLEANING ITEMS, SNACKS, FRUIT, VEGETABLES, PAPER PRODUCTS, ETC.
