Hello! My name is Dr. Tanchonika Harris. I am the new school counselor at Oakland Elementary School! I am very proud and excited to join this wonderful school in educating and preparing the next generation of productive citizens.
As a school counselor, my primary responsibility is to promote the academic, personal, and social development of all students. This year at Oakland Elementary, I will be teaching lessons in all grades. The lessons will include character education, bullying, and conflict resolution. I will also be working with students individually or in small groups. Individual and group counseling will consist of issues pertaining to family concerns, personal problems, bullying, behavior, social skills, and other issues. Any school faculty and staff member can refer students. Students can also complete a referral form to see me. However, I will send home a permission form for ongoing individual and group counseling. In addition, I will be collaborating with teachers, administrators, staff, families, and stakeholders to ensure that we are creating a safe, effective, and meaningful environment. I am a visible counselor, and I am always willing to assist in any way.
Also, our school is participating in an important district initiative. It is called Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a process for creating safe and effective schools. We want to be proactive in teaching our students positive behaviors. We will be using four school-wide rules:
Always be Safe
Respect Others and Yourself
There are rules and expectations posted throughout the building. To reinforce the rules, students will receive tickets as well as whole class rewards. More information about PBIS tickets and rewards will be coming soon.
I am here to help students, as well as provide support for our teachers, parents, guardians, and stakeholders. I can be reached by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone at 901-465-3804.
